S&P : Investment-Grade Corporate Bonds Continue Their Exceptional 2014 Returns In May

The S&P 500 Index increased by 2.1% in May, but corporate bonds in the U.S. weren’t left behind. Investment-grade bonds posted their fifth straight month of gains, for a return of 6.55% for the first five months of 2014, while speculative-grade bond returns were positive for the ninth straight month, posting a year-to-date return of 4.6%. Yields on both corporate debt as well as U.S. Treasuries declined by the end of May from a month earlier, possibly demonstrating a concurrent search for yield as well as a move to safety.
